How is IELTS result counted?

IELTS exam consists of four parts, each measuring a different language skill.

There are 40 questions in listening and reading part.

In writing section, there are two parts. The first one is relatively less demanding and has less value in terms of grading.

Speaking evaluation is based on different speaking skills, such as ability to communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences and situations by answering a range of questions; the ability to speak at length on a given topic using appropriate language and organising ideas coherently; and the ability to express and justify opinions and to analyse, discuss and speculate about issues.

Every part is graded separately out of 9 again and the total sum is divided four to get the average and that makes the overall IELTS score.

The scores can be in whole or half.

If the overall score average is in quarters then the number is rounded upwards, making a half. For example;

  • listening: 6,0
  • reading: 6,5
  • writing: 6,5
  • speaking:6,0
  • - average: 6,25
  • Overall: 6,5
